A city break is not the first thing that comes to mind when planning a family holiday. But, as our two daughters (Theia, five, Robyn, two) prepared for the bloody six-week battle for our attention this summer, I needed a trip to give my elder child some one-on-one time while not breaking the bank or eating up too much annual leave. The solution? Three days in Copenhagen. Flights are quick and cheap, there are fantastic museums for children, a 180-year-old theme park right in the centre, plus a reputation for superb (and free) playgrounds.

It was those that enthralled Theia. So, after touching down, we climbed aboard our rented three-wheeler cargo bike (not walking reduces the chances of tantrums by at least 40 per cent)
